BOJ hiked rates to 0.75% but importantly signalled that further rate hikes would not be coming anytime soon. So dovish overall. In response, the market is selling off on the Yen, and stock futures are on a upwards trajectory.

Iran invading Iraq will be an interesting (of course highly escalatory and worrying) move. I know little of the region, but one corner the Iranians might consider they can show an edge could be land forces. Both the US and Israel surely wouldn't want to be dragged into a land war. Thus the leverage.

In July 1932, Weimar Germany's chancellor von Papen and President von Hindenburg orchestrated a federal coup to gain control of the powerful Prussian regional government. This paved the way for the Nazis gaining sweeping law enforcement powers as soon as Hitler took power.

Cannot but respect Ukrainian ingenuity
Ukrainian security service sources tell @financialtimes.com the agency is conducting "a large-scale special operation to destroy enemy bomber aircraft" deep inside Russia.

"SBU drones are targeting aircraft that bomb Ukrainian cities every night." Claims 40 aircraft have been hit.

I don't know about your countries, but in Japan, the popular take on social media comments regarding the Trump ban on Harvard internationals, is "way to go Trump, Japan should do the same". We are all doomed.

Among the post–World War I settlements, the Treaty of Trianon may have left the most enduring source of contention. Hungary’s grievances were muted during its time as a Soviet satellite and for two decades after 1989, as it pursued European integration. Now, under Orbán, revisionism has returned.
Ukraine’s Security Service uncovered a Hungarian spy network operated by an agent promoted by Orban, the network was gathering information to facilitate what appears to be a potential invasion by Hungary.

"Do you think the American people are willing to use nuclear force to sustain Ukraine if Ukraine and Russia are in a conflict?" (Joe Biden as Senator in 1995)

This is revealing. And it was just one year after the signing of the infamous Budapest Memorandum.

The Russian missile attack on Kyiv last week might have cost Putin more than he anticipated. Since Trump is so ignorant, any event that jumps out of the echo chamber of the alt-right media could have an unexpected effect on him. One has to exploit Trump's ignorance and randomness to one's advantage.

Dropping birth rates around most of the world has to be good news. Earth cannot sustain 10 billion industrialised humans. I reckon a sustainable population is around 2 billion. A compact population would contribute towards eradicating poverty too, due to a higher share of per capita global wealth.

If the FT's reporting is true, the war is at its closest to an armistice ever since Feb 2022.

If Putin were sane (a big if), he will eventually negotiate a return of some of the land under Russian occupation, in exchange for Ukrainian de jure recognition of the loss of Crimea and Eastern Donbas.
