I don’t personally use the term Dark Ages for this reason but I do think people get a little bit pedantic/histrionic about it. Very few people I would be willing to talk to have the kind of triumphalist Whig narrative worthy of the level of ink spilled over this.

“We call it the dark ages because we had to depend on the east to save ‘western civilization.’”

Still think it is a valid point of emphasis that Western Europe was a uniquely shitty place to live during a certain part of this period. Not necessarily with respect to what would come next, but with respect to contemporary civilizations elsewhere.

Am I allowed to call it the dark ages if I think the enlightenment was worse?
