Hi, I’m Eric: Proprietor, Trapper Creek Guiding & Provisions Company and Clothespin Bakehouse in Priest Lake, Idaho. Angler. Author. Advocate. Blue dot. Open fire cook. Sourdough baker. Fly fisher. Lover of wooden boats and old Jeeps.
My pal Jim got into a nice one, and I was lucky enough to pick up a spirited smaller one with the last cast before a delicious onshore smoked salmon chowder.

Late summer reminisce. Dinner and a movie hits a bit different on an old wooden cruiser.

Got to chatting about saltwater flyfishing gear yesterday and you know what they say about never forgetting your first? Same applies to fishing. My first Florida Keys bonefish quite a few years back.

Tis the season. Nowhere near as “pretty” as the high desert steelhead earlier this week, but the pre-Thanksgiving return of the chum makes for great play.

That waning push of temperate breath, when the cottonwoods yield to their juniper winter sunrise.

I may have discovered my all-time favorite steelhead river over the past couple of days. Some of the most pristine fish I’ve ever had the pleasure to witness.

Work in progress. Can you guess the name of the fly pattern? Extra points for the name of the creator. Hint: someone famous in fly fishing lore.

Nick asks the right question: What could possibly be more important on this Friday?

Sayonara, Dick Cheney. Being a fly fisher or lover of the outdoors will never atone for what you did or who you were. In many ways, you embodied the model for the gross-natured policies that you so despised in this current clown show of an administration.

On my way to put a couple of the boats away for the season and I could not help but stick the phone out of the window. The tamaracks are doing their thing. Just gorgeous.

I’m curious about your thoughts, #flyfishing friends. I believe that a fly line, properly balanced for the rod, is the most important single expense in any setup. If you splurge anywhere, to me, that’s the spot.

Do you agree? I’d love to hear from you.

Got over to The Deschutes for the fall Steelhead Camp. Needless to say, it did not disappoint. Fish or no, it never does (but there were plenty).

My man @nickparish.bsky.social offers up his thoughts on private equity and its effects on fly fishing and the outdoors industry.

Where do you weigh-in on how PE impacts the quality of the gear we choose to buy and our most beloved brands?

Water fishing? Not that I thought it was possible, but this idiot’s vapid ignorance, wholly devoid of curiosity and the ability to articulate coherently outdoes itself on a daily basis. Blown away? Good lord.
Trump: "I think water fishing, I think almost anything we have to get into a boat right now in that area would not be doing too well."

It’s been a summer of fun with this little guy. So far, a new Weber carb and pending conversion to disc brakes. Will keep it mostly stock but thinking about a minor lift as I upgrade suspension. What do you think? #jeepster #overland #flyfishing #4x4

I did not fish while down on this trip to Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido, but I think we did pretty well. 😉
