The 2,704-mile (4352 km) Toronto-Vancouver run took 68 hours, over 15 hours faster than the previous schedule of the "Dominion." By comparison, today’s @VIA_Rail version of the “Canadian” takes 95 hours to travel between the two cities. 3/3

Step on board a newly upgraded Amtrak Superliner sleeper car on the California Zephyr and see inside a roomette I booked for a 15-hour journey.
I paid $400 for a roomette on a 15-hour Amtrak train. The 23-square-foot space was more comfortable than I expected.

Jan 5, 1955: a CP test train leaves Montreal's Windsor Station with orders to run to Vancouver as safely and efficiently as possible. The test run was to determine an appropriate schedule for CP's new streamlined transcontinental passenger train, "The Canadian." 1/3

Perhaps most widely mourned were Trains 1/9 and 2/10, the last runs of the Montreal/Toronto-Vancouver "Canadian" over the CP route. There were many additional last runs throughout Canada. VIA Rail’s passenger system was effectively reduced by 50% on this day in 1990. 3/3
