thought it'd be fun to make zines w/ friends game jam style and get a better hands-on sense of the machine. drew all layers straight ahead by hand and then scanned into the riso for each color layer. prob took 3 hours tops start to finish. ough <- me thinking too hard abt millions knives

materials-wise just been really into paper this year. giving paper goods more consideration and intention. calling card and matchbook are both different finishes than the prints; thought the eclecticism would help the vintage/used feeling. also first time making custom packaging as part of a piece

making zines by hand— scanning, assembling, cutting, awling, folding, stapling— is a way of still existing in my work after it leaves me. this is still a conversation between us. you can feel and see my hand in the physical form. it's unique, so you specifically are the one conversing with it. etc

the two are interwoven but essentially, when drawing fanart i'm almost never thinking about the end result as independent or self-encompassing. a lot of my fan art is just participation, in visual form; in conversations with other fans, in response to the source text. it does more than it is

handmade sketch zines. these come about as a result of two impulses: 1) frustration with increasing commodity fetishism in fanwork spaces and 2) attempts to recapture some of the context these drawings had initially, which is to say, their relational value

wanted to feel like these charms didn’t just visually depict characters, but could invoke a sense of the values they practiced, such that they could inspire the same in someone holding them. for me, at least. stuff i make is primarily to fill a personal want; likeminded souls along the way are bonus

this informed everything from shape/size (meant to nestle in a hand) to scenes depicted (moment of self-actualization at great personal cost) to entwining color palette (three characters at odds throughout the story, and yet each in pursuit of the same: freedom, safety, belonging. a tri-foil)
