SUPERPOD!
Orca fans (and researchers) were thrilled when the entire population of southern resident killer whales (all 74 of 'em) met up in Puget Sound this week.

Saw this blatantly partisan message atop a federal website while reporting on the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

Not new, but still stunning to see such blatant partisan finger-pointing atop U.S. government agency websites.

What great photos of southern resident killer whales off Vashon Island on Sunday.
Thanks to @jolenatagg.bsky.social for sharing them for my latest @kuow.org story on those whales' struggle to survive.

@whaleresearch.bsky.social says the month-old whale known as J64 was its 18-year-old mother J42’s first offspring. Here’s J64 in September:

Scary! Was it in either of WSDOT's priority zones for future wildlife crossings?

I was excited to see a bat star in Kyuquot Sound (off Vancouver Island) this summer.
This one even had a bonus sixth arm (bat stars can have up to 9 arms 💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪).

Alas, I got a source’s name wrong in my story on Puget Sound puffins. We fixed it and added a correction note, right before the story’s last, fun puffin photo. Now I feel like the PUFFIN OF SHAME is glaring at me. Makes me want VERY MUCH to never err again!

Prophetic place names? Glacier researcher says White Chuck Glacier (like all 15 named glaciers on Glacier Peak) is… a dead duck. Full story from me/@kuow.org

TIL (while reading about glaciers) of a Swiss geologist and mountaineer named Horace Benedict de Saussure, 1740–1799. I'm imagining him greeting people, "Nice to meet you, I'm so sure."

The map won't quite load at airnow.gov... I'm guessing because so many Seattleites are wondering if Smoketember has arrived... Fires now ring the Puget Sound region in almost every direction. #wawx

Afternoon commute for #BearGulchFire crew on Lake Cushman reservoir on Thursday. It's the Olympic Peninsula's biggest fire in 74 years, since the Great Forks Fire of 1951. U.S. Forest Service photo. #wawx

The #BearGulchFire surged into Olympic National Park with this week's heatwave. Grew 2,000 acres in a day. Rain this weekend expected to slow but not douse it--that could take a solid week of rain. #wawx

Today’s Puget Sound business journal:
While many aggregating anemones (Anthopleura elegantissima) at Golden Gardens in Seattle on Sunday said, “Sorry, we’re closed,” at least one stayed open for business all day.

I'll add... lots of GOOD coverage... then there was this, which I couldn't bring myself to read after seeing its horribly wrong, inflammatory headline. (The killer bacteria is in the same genus as another one that causes cholera in humans. Oy.)

"Bumblebees are probably the entry drug to other insects,” Martin said. “People can be grossed out by spiders or beetles or that kind of thing, but bumblebees, they're cute. They're fuzzy. Charismatic mini-fauna, not the charismatic megafauna.”
