Baseball, football, music, art, design, magazines and nonpolitical things. My obnoxious opinions are available on Twitter @heybriandawson; this, I hope, is the friendlier me.
Sarah and I moved our son into college yesterday. It wasn’t the drop that was difficult—it was walking in the door at home without him. My God.

Will informed me today that 51 years ago tonight was 10 Cent Beer Night.

He started by saying, “Dad, you’re 51, right?” I forgot that it happened in 1974.

I love that my son is sufficiently a baseball historian to know about 10 Cent Beer Night.

@mleccese.bsky.social @kurtblumenau.bsky.social Red Sox just pulled off a 9-8 fly ball out. Ever seen that? Wow.

This has to be the most dystopian thing any prominent person has ever said. Go to hell, dude.

@mleccese.bsky.social @kurtblumenau.bsky.social I don’t follow the NHL, but from what I’m seeing the playoffs so far have been spectacular.

@mleccese.bsky.social @kurtblumenau.bsky.social Look at this fantastic picture of Dewey. And I think that’s Thurman Munson alongside him.

May 2, 2007. My little boy turns 18 today. Love you endlessly, Will.

I have heard a million versions of this song; this might be the best one

@kurtblumenau.bsky.social @mleccese.bsky.social Move-in is August 15-17. I might not stop crying for six weeks thereafter, but I could not be prouder of, or more excited for, him. I loved JMU when he and I toured it last year; he and Sarah went back last week for the hard sell, and it won the day.

@kurtblumenau.bsky.social @mleccese.bsky.social Beyond thrilled and proud to let you know that Will has chosen James Madison U. Very good school, gorgeous campus, excellent football and basketball for that true college rooting experience. An hour NW of here--far enough but not too far.

Knight’s “Hi Guys” album is not exactly the nadir of the novelty-song form, but it’s gotta be close. The novelty-song Mt. Rushmore has just two stone heads: Tom Lehrer and Weird Al. Vastly different styles but superb artists, les deux.

Funniest revelation of the evening is that the drummer and bassist in Lovett’s band were session players on Ted Knight’s “Hi Guys” LP from 1975

Lyle Lovett and his sensational band last night in Lynchburg, Virginia. His voice is showing a bit of its wear—he’s 67 now—but the man is a total professional. This is at least the dozenth time Sarah and I have seen him, and he’s never put on a bad show. And man, his band. Just awesome.

@kurtblumenau.bsky.social Giants reliever today. I assume you approve. (Unfortunately, the pitch after this yielded a home run.) But a beanpole throwing this low is worth appreciating regardless.

@kurtblumenau.bsky.social @mleccese.bsky.social I hope you both saw Dewey and Fred Lynn and Jim Rice this weekend for (I assume) the fiftieth anniversary of the 1975 Sox.

Among the many reasons baseball is awesome: the shortest player in the game (Jose Altuve, 5’6”) just homered off the tallest (Bailey Ober, 6’9”).

Got my Girl Scout Peanut Butter Patties today. Greatest cookie ever. But they were much bigger when I was a kid. (Or maybe I was just smaller.) But I think the Girl Scouts are guilty of shrinkflation, and I won’t stand for it. Come on, #GirlScouts, have you no integrity?

I have them losing to #Houston in the Final Four, but after watching that demolition of Baylor I’m not sure anyone can beat #Duke if they’re healthy. That was impressive.
