Introduced mass combat ahead of schedule in our group. They were still well into Expert when they took the charge and defended a city against an incoming army of hobbling marauders. Players loved the simplicity of the system.

And as a result I've had more satisfying villains and stories with this somewhat loose system than I have had when making each and every painstaking detail previously.
A rhythm emerges, asking my players what *they* want to accomplish next and taking the time between session to help prepare for that

They plan for the future, setting their own goals and priorities, to an extent that I merely define the sandbox and add a unique handful of grit to throw into it for them to form the plot. It's a refreshing method of storytelling, and each person around our "table" is excited to advance their story

They're heroes. Tales of their heroism spread across the bickering states through which they travel, their deeds and conquests shining bright in a land beset with uncertainty. They look on a map not as a collection of names to be explored but as a measure of their progress and achievement

"Space opera inspired by county intrigue of the Napoleonic Wars/Age of Sail" might work but I feel like I should at least chain them to the couch and make them watch an episode to get the *feel* I'm going for. Shame that so many of them dislike slow media and or old anime.

I love them all, but if I had to pick one it would be the first Gazetteer, the Grand Duchy of Karameikos. It's the book that launched my interest in BECMI as a whole and it holds a special place for me as a result.
