What works: AI as a sparring partner for question design.
“Is ‘Bergstation’ (mountain station) problematic in a question?”
AI: “Yes, assumes familiarity with alpine infrastructure. Students from abroad or flat regions won’t know this.”
37 iterations later: Procrastination. But quality improved.

Unlimited exam attempts. Optional exercises. No mandatory checkpoints. Is 70% failure about personal responsibility – or a system designed to produce it?
I refuse to lower standards until we ask: “Name a language starting and ending with C.” That’s theater, not education.

What can I do? Mandatory midterm tests? Legally not allowed. Mandatory exercises? Only voluntary – outsourced to AI. Labs? Not feasible with 250 students, 5 TAs.
The system only allows subtle incentives. No binding structures.

Busywork. They summarize slides, watch videos, read notes. Feels productive – but you don’t learn programming by watching. You learn by programming.
The Greeks called it Akrasia: acting against better judgment. Students know what to do. Don’t do it anyway.

Students perform a play. We sit in the audience and applaud. Workload? Skyrockets. Impact? Questionable. Fighting with swords against drones.

The disease is systemic. Symptom fighting won’t fix it. Next week: How we professors succumb to AI temptation ourselves.

Our response? Creative symptom fighting:

“Ask about events after knowledge cutoff!” → ChatGPT just googles.

“Submit chat histories!” → Tab 1: official chat for prof. Tab 2: real work. Tab 3: student asks ChatGPT how to fake reflection.

It examines the influence of different senders and notification texts on the remediation of website hacking. Mit #security.txt können Website-Betreiber Kontaktdaten für die Meldung von Sicherheitslücken angeben. Ich habe schon darüber nachgedacht. Übersetzen geht dank DeepL/LLMs ja recht schnell. Etwas mühsam ist es aber, das Tool zweisprachig anzulegen.

Ich setze KI-Tools schon recht viel in meiner Lehre ein – von der Erstellung von Übungsaufgaben bis zur Automatisierung von Feedback. Das funktioniert gut, aber ich beobachte, dass viele Kolleginnen und Kollegen das Thema entweder komplett vermeiden oder ohne klare Strategie und Regeln agieren.

Oh je. Wir schaffen Turnitin gerade ab weil es nichts taugt und das Klima vergiftet.
