I don't think so, though it sure feels that way sometimes.

Maybe I'm deluded, but I think the artist is driven by the desire to repay a debt to nature. Life – nature – gives the artist a wellspring of experience going way back.

The drummer boy in the mural "3rd Minnesota entering Little Rock", is my gr-gr-grandfather, William E. Hale (future MN Circuit Court judge). That's him in the photo, age 16, in Nashville, after battle of Shiloh.

Over the snowy ridge
the blackbirds clambered,
clamoring.
And I mumbled –

Maybe even the most ornery prophets & loner artists are in their heart of hearts seeking that supportive group & lively milieu (someday, somewhere, in this world or the next). (= joy, happiness)

Thanks, Jordan. Feels like I'm walking blindfolded into the dark. It's a beautiful dynamic little church, but I'm very new there, and nobody's getting any younger (that's just one part of the challenge!)

That makes complete sense to me. And it's helpful. I just got chosen to be senior warden at a small Episcopalian & historical African-American church here. I am assigned to help make it grow. My thinking tends toward interfaith outreach & shared ethical response to current US political miasma.

Just to say, I also am totally uncertain about ultimate religious realities, and purposes, and the interpretations, decisions and commitments humanity comes to take, or not take, about them. Though I have my beliefs and theories and conjectures.

But that's partly what I mean. That seems to me a basic aspect of Herzl's project and what followed.

Okay. Enlighten me, please.

Isn't it an existential response to the long history of "othering" & antisemitism, culminating in 20th-century Nazi horrors? Combined with a hope or faith in the specific prophetic/divine promises? Kind of a symbiotic, deeply entwined thing there with historical Christianity & its culture/politics.
