Meritocracy is BS. But my time at Harvard was for merit. Pierre Manent thought I was funny and that it was neat to watch a hick speak about Montaigne, Montesquieu, and Jean-Jacques. So he wrote to a funded buddy at Harvard and was, like, “You ever seen a dog at a typewriter?”

I sat to write some post-funeral thoughts, but found myself stabbing goblins all day. These are from my first foray into goblin territory. I like the dagger handle we’ve developed along the way. Might become a tattooer. Or artist or whatever. But I already said novelist. Hmm.

I like having friends who say “I’ve been working on my book” and mean they’re trying to read a book. I’ve been watching these people. I’ve begun to believe they’re happier than I am. But so is an overdose victim. So who knows?
