There was a ugly scuff on the blade (upper first image) but I managed to polish it out after 3 hours! Not perfect, but at least you can make out the detail now.

So when the saya to a katana no longer tightly fits around the Habaki you can easily fix this by glueing paper to the inside.
But historically-
You glue a piece of rice paper to the inside of it....
Katanas were believed to be "The home of Gods"
Therefore-
