#Conwy is such gem. A beautiful, bustling, charming, friendly town with loads of excellent independent shops like Edwards of Conwy, Baravelli's chocolates, Vinomondo wine, the Cheese Room, amazing bakers etc. I 'might' be taking a few things home with me 😗😋

Conwy Castle, #NorthWales. Along with the defensive walls encircling the town, it cost Edward I the astronomical sum of £15,000 to build, 1283-87.
Darkly atmospheric, haunted by jackdaws, pigeons and the ghosts of soldiers and kings...

Great atmosphere in Conwy today for the half-marathon, thirteen miles round the Great Orme 😯 Our son-in-law was running so we made a weekend of it 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 #NorthWales #castles

Mind you, this was student me at a dinner in 1976 with fag, retro wallpaper and classic candle in Chianti bottle 😅

Richard Burton lighting up in every interview on BBC 4. No wonder he had such a gravelly voice

Fabulous site with a stupendous view...had a delightful walk up there a while ago with @churton.bsky.social and explored the main cave too

Like beautiful little pieces of abstract art. Reminiscent of Boro, long-repaired antique Japanese workwear, and the idea of wabi-sabi, the Japanese concept of beauty that comes with age. Though think I'd maybe draw the line at the bootees

'These days, the 'Power Walk' is more of a cliche, appearing in numerous spoof movies and eye-rolling scenes of irony.'

Detail from Fireworks at Ryōgoku, 1858, colour woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858); from his 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' series.
My 📷 at the recent Hiroshige exhibition at @britishmuseum.bsky.social hence the reflections

Took a group of old schoolfriends on a history tour of my city of #Chester. Might have overdone the Roman bits slightly 👍😅 but they were impressed that parts of the original Roman city walls are still there & visible, forming the base of the later medieval walls.

A friend's pony living her unicorn dream at Halloween. She's the most docile, sweet natured animal. I'm not normally a horsey person but she could convert me 🦄💖

The wonderful Mary Beard at Storyhouse #Chester last night...bringing emperors and ordinary Romans to life, in our own Roman city 🏛️❤️

YES! Annoying isn't it. But you can hop off there, walk up St John Street to the Eastgate & up the steps there to continue.
I might bump into you, am taking 8 old school friends on a tour of the city & walls on Wed. You could have tagged along 😅😉

The student me in headscarf and hippy beads in front of a scaffolding-free Parthenon, August 1973, and my rather cooler friend Ian in black, same day.The scaffolding that went up soon after that has finally come down...

Felt like time travel, sitting in one of those stone window seats looking out at the quiet unchanged landscape with the silvery river slipping by.

Well. At Maiden Castle the wind was buffeting so extremely I'm sure we managed at least a 30 degree lean 🤥 it was mad, couldn't walk round top of ramparts. Had to risk a standing-up selfie to get us & the view in...my sister's more sensible.

It really is. No vehicles at all in the town so literally everything comes in by donkey, horse or human.

An extraordinary place that I'd wanted to go to from the second I saw this aerial view, and it doesn't disappoint. Go, stay a few nights in the old town, explore every narrow stone street and ancient Byzantine church, swim off the rocks.
Heaven 💙

Fabulous object. I love this beautifully linear painting on marble from Herculaneum of the daughters of Niobe playing astragals, unaware of their fate (my photos in MANN, almost exactly a year ago...sigh ) it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giocatr...

The stylistically similar, larger 'Colchester Vase' depicting gladiators fighting & dogs hunting, is currently showing in our local Grosvenor Museum here in the Roman city of Chester, in the 'Gladiators of Britain' BM/Colchester/Ipswich museums sponsored exhibition 🏛️🏺

This might be a more relevant picture. Less of the hysterical anti-immigrant propaganda thank you. We need these people
