i don't think it does? even if "value" only arises through relation with a subject you can still make this distinction. i value baths. but i like them because they bring me pleasure/comfort; if they didn't do that, i wouldn't value them. on the other hand i value comfort because of what it is.

i don't take it that way at least in casual speech. i think intrinsic/extrinsic distinguishes the locus of what is actually valued, rather than the locus of the valuer. a bath's value is not intrinsic because its value derives from delivering some *other* thing of value (comfort).

how are you understanding "intrinsic"? in "intrinsic value" i understand its role somewhat like the use in "intrinsic muscle" vs. "extrinsic muscle"

nice! i should switch to this for my lecture notes so i can feel better about my (ab)use of footnotes! i used to use it for personal notes, but it fell off my radar at some point.
