Another #FridayFling snippet from A CERTAIN DARKNESS - Lenore and Volker's meet cute.

This was the first scene that I wrote and, though it went through a few iterations, these lines didn't change much. I love the juxtaposition of him saving her from a fall seconds after he's tried to off her.
When you’re magically shit, you learn how to defend yourself. I didn’t need strength to counter the hex, just the ability to turn it aside. The way the hair at my nape stands on end indicates that the spellcaster is behind me, so I spin around to face the git. And smash into a tall, dark, and very solid figure. I reel backwards, trip over my own feet, and what stops me ending up on my arse are the large hands that whip out to grab my upper arms. The shock is enough to break my concentration – and my counter-spell along with it. I look up, startled, as my broken spell swirls around us and blends with his shattered hex. Because he is obviously male. And just as obviously a demon, though his visage is hidden behind a copper mask. It’s the eyes that give him away - red irises that blaze with anger.

We have a simple lunch of cheese-and-onion quiche with side salad, then I park Volker in front of the TV to introduce him to a few of my favourite shows. He takes great interest in The Great British Bake Off, even making notes, much to my amusement. He’s less sure about Doctor Who, which is shocking. “You have to like it,” I tell him. “It’s part of the deal.” “What deal?” he replies, but he’s grinning. “I could put on a film?” I flick through Amazon’s offerings. I’m tempted by Four Weddings and a Funeral, but he might walk out. I settle on Shaun of the Dead and popcorn.
