Y6 teacher (22 yrs). Maths Lead - MaST. SMHL. PSHE. Pupil Voice. NPQ. Yorkshire lass living in Cheshire. Landlocked beach lover. Hiker, (slow)runner, crafter, baker, loud music singer & listener, rugby watcher. Constantly seeking dopamine & coffee.
One of my favourite ways to explore multiples and common multiples is making a Numicon number line. Prime numbers also emerge. So much rich mathematical discussion about the patterns, positions and predictions.

'Snow Week' was the strangest start to the new term with triggering flashbacks to lockdown. All learning back online. Stuck at home. Uncertainty. We tried to open on Thursday- more snow scuppered that. Grateful though to live where we live (even if it isn't Yorkshire!).

Simple but effective Y6 Christmas cards. No glue - all handsewn together. Sewing buttons - learning lifeskills! Card and decoration all in one.

Residentials - my favourite time of the year. Leading 50 children around the Yorkshire Dales. Building resilience and teamwork. 'Old and crumbly' pretty much sums up how I feel by the end! Worth it though. Be a sad day when I can't throw myself into the activities anymore.

This turned out to be an excellent first week activity, one that I may return to later in the year as there wasn't a single group who managed it www.giftofcuriosity.com/can-you-save... Lots of laughter though - nothing better than a classroom full of shared fun.

First book that I share with a new class in September is 'The truth about my unbelievable summer'. Discussing and writing about what they didn't do is a good leveller.

Also created self portraits inspired by Opie's Blur album cover using photos and an ipad app (can't remember which one). (the first one is my son's 😍)

I love using Julian Opie as an art study in Y6. Inspired by 'Alone in a crowd', we use photos, tracing and then make multiple base photocopies to then play around with adding colour to different areas. Have displayed as a group collage and also hung up individually from beams in the classroom.

Not even finished the summer holidays yet Sainsbury's can help me fill my Christmas stockings 🤷‍♀️. Gets earlier every year.

They created these pictures based on an illustration in the book to help them plan their writing - made a great display.

Love using The Invisible by Tom Percival as a stimulus for writing in Y6. Just taken delivery of Flower Block by Lanisha Butterfield - looks like the perfect accompaniment to use alongside it. Similar themes and both full of diverse characters and so much to discover in the illustrations.
