if true, parses as "trying to start a civil war" because that's the music that plays when the civil war starts in the video game...

"deported" is inaccurate, fix your headline, do better

You might have misread Serwer? Of the "elite institutions" that are displaying cowardice, the Senate minority is only one of many

I mean it's Paul Ryan saying "what's said in the family stays in the family" about Trump/Russia in 2016. The criminal gang dynamic predated Trump

"we tried a coup, failed, but faced no consequences; we can do whatever we want and everyone else in political life will bend over backwards to make it legitimate after the fact" is their theory of the world and so far has not been wrong

It's interesting, isn't it, that the MM report just vanished into the media ether. No chin-scratchers about it in the NYT or Atlantic. No long Ezra Klein pod about it. No talking-head roundtables on CNN or MSNBC.

The political & media elites really, really don't want to talk about it. Why?

Maybe we are talking past each other. I think it's good for Senators to reach across the aisle (the gym anecdote) but I do think there are downsides to expecting that to work. I don't think it's expected/good for Senators to do nothing else, which is how I read your comment about only having time.

Those are both pretty extreme generalizations. I haven't heard someone argue that I shouldn't expect the Senate minority to wield power (normatively). But I think I understand where you are coming from better

Thanks! I would bet a lot against that. Hope you're right of course

Are you saying that experiences with constituents in the next month will lead to Rs in Congress taking action outside of their current priorities (tax cuts)? Or just that they'll be more bipartisan on tax cuts than they were for the CR?

Why do you believe it is possible and why do you believe it is only a month away? What might change your mind? Genuine question as if you were correct on either count it would be a good thing

Isn't the cloture vote a display of cynicism by the Senators as a whole? It's unclear to me why any of the Senators who voted No on cloture would want Schumer to keep leading them (unless I'm being cynical). Curious for your thoughts

Genuine q... Do you think the Senate should get rid of the filibuster? I'm hearing that you think 51 votes is enough for the Senate to do whatever it wants which I'm pretty sure is not a mainstream opinion
