For the last round of the cookie baking competition I made gevulde speculaas. I wasn't entirely pleased with it, it was too hard around the edges and too dry, but it still earned me second place. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I have some spijs (filling similar to marzipan) left so I might give it another go later this week.

I had another workshop today, this time mixed media painting / collage. I didn't expect to like it that much but I really did, I was just going with the flow, very unlike me. And now I have this musical grasshopper situation.

The borders of the painting are decorated with leaf illustrations, text from a book page, an oak leaf and a seed pod. Embroidery was used for the strings of the lute and a firework-like shape. Circular stamps in the top right were made with an acorn cap. There is also a cutout of a ball-shaped yellow flower coming out from behind the lute on the right side.

With colleagues we went to do a stained glass workshop. Really fun! Not so easy and it takes a lot of time, but eventually I got the hang of it. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get it done completely, but I'll be going back to the workshop to finish it up another day.

The outer shape is a rectangle, and the inner pieces consist of rectangles, squares, and diamonds. The work is lying on top of a wooden plank and nails keep everything tightly in place.

For the second round of the cookie baking competition I made Indonesian spekkoek (spekuk in Indonesian I think?). I was so stoked to see how nicely the layers turned out when I cut it. It took a long time to make but very pleased with the results. Recipe: www.laurasbakery.nl/spekkoek/

Recently got into Minecraft (I tend to be late to the party) and made this abutment and mill that I'm pretty pleased with.

Een mooie vlinder die ik zag vlak nadat ik mijn haar had bevrijd van een plakplant.
Een zwarte vlinder met witte vlekken en kleinere rode vlekjes langs de randen van de vleugels zit op kleine roze bloemetjes temidden van het groen.

Stekjes update. Degene die er het best uitzag is inmiddels al bezig aan blad nummer 5. 🥳 De stekjes die maar geen wortels wilden maken zijn uiteindelijk toch gaan wortelen. Op de pot gezet en de bladeren zijn helemaal geel geworden, maar nieuwe bladeren zijn al op komst. Mogelijk lukken dus alle 5 😊

Negen jaar samen (eigenlijk vandaag maar Agus' verstandskies wordt vandaag getrokken) dus zijn we naar Florijn gegaan voor een "high beer". Drie gangen eten, allemaal een verrassing, met bijpassend biertje. Was vergeten te zeggen dat ik geen vlees eet maar stiekem wel blij mee uiteindelijk. 😅🤤
Een tafel in restaurant/café Florijn met op de tafel twee borden met rood vlees, gegrilde groenten, kardamomsaus en pompoenpuree, met in het midden een bakje patat met saus want het blijft Nederland. Aan de andere kant van de tafel zit Agus, mijn Argentijnse verloofde. Hij draagt een lichtblauwe blouse met korte mouwen, hij lacht en kijkt naar zijn bord terwijl hij het vlees aansnijdt. Verder ligt er op tafel mijn zonnebril en er staat een kaars aan. Het restaurant is sfeervol verlicht en er zijn geen andere mensen. In de achtergrond in de muur zitten twee ovaalvormige biervaten met de getallen 11 en 12.

Second batch of alfajores done. The second picture is a side by side comparison. The picture I posted last week was taken was while the chocolate had not set yet. The next day it looked all bubbly and had lost all gloss. This time I relented and took the time to temper the chocolate and it paid off!

My previous attempt at making dulce de leche was semi-successful: it tasted alright but was a bit too firm, it didn't acquire the typical brown color for some reason, and it crystallized a bit in the fridge. The girlfriend of my fiancé's father gave me the tip that you can also make it simply by ...

Naturalis in Leiden, met als hoogtepunt de kudde Triceratops. 😄

This particular one is called Trix and is one of the most complete, largest and oldest T-rex skeletons ever found. A herd of five triceratops skeletons. I do lab stuff. Sometimes I take photos of the lab stuff.

Here's some pictures of the Akta (for protein purification), a recent SDS-PAGE that I broke the corner off of, some little poop bacteria colonies, and some carrot leaves in tubes.
