Interesting. I wonder if this also is related to the subprime-morgage crash: not only did these mortgages badly distort the market, they also badly distorted consumer expectations so that the unaffordability of a suburban mcmansion is hard for people to accept.

It's been a long time, but I recall when Dem. Speaker Foley lost reelection, a lot was made of his clueless comments that assumed teens watched Sunday news shows. But (IIRC) less was made of a poll showing voters in his district believed whomever won would be speaker.
