Was all about the 4 C’s: cooking, cats, cocktails, crafts but now there’s no point; 🦋; former food writer; She/Her. Making good trouble; resistance by not being complicit.
Happy Pride!

My Kuma has been gone a few weeks now and it’s been so hard. My friends urged me to adopt another cat immediately, so I did. He reminds me of Kuma sometimes but he’s more fearless and very glued to my side, 7-8 months old, a Russian Blue 💙 Meet Otis 💙

My Kuma has thoracic cancer and I am bereft. My friends are keeping me going but knowing he won’t be here long has gutted me. The sweetest boy ever.

Made a rice cooker version of lap yuk clay pot with fresh shitakes. I might have to get more mushrooms and make another pot, pure comfort food.

Delighted to discover that Daymoon’s seeded rye mini loaf is just like the sunflower filled rugbrød or saatenbrot I grew up eating, thanks to my dad’s European and Scandinavian colleagues. So good for you, a thin slice with butter is so satisfying. We would eat it while backpacking or camping.

Made an enormous vegetarian lasagne with a friend with my mother’s bechamel enriched with oyster and trumpet mushrooms between the layers. 2 caponata-esque layers and a basket ricotta center with chard and spinach. Raw brussel sprout salad to offset. Leftovers for days.

Duck and prune borscht. Recipe by @oliahercules.bsky.social
I tried, my spoon does not stand up in it, but I did my best and it tastes delicious. A little act of self-care in these troubled times.

Made a batch of miso butter and dressed some salmon with it. Maybe tomorrow I will be up to cooking it. Planned chan chan yaki with a great little arrowhead cabbage from the farmers market.

Discovering the joys of almond butter, why am I so late to this? I bought a tub from Gus’s but plan to make my own when almonds hit the farmers markets. Thinking of putting some in my porridge, besides toast and cookies what do you use it with?

Ordered some Slanted Door pork buns and claypot chicken from Neon, came chilled/frozen (you can order from multiple restaurants). Feels quite poignant to enjoy these now, I wonder if they will open on Valencia as Chef Pham had planned.

Been bookmarking recipes a lot these days, trying to get inspiration for Burns Night. I have a prepped chicken Balmoral in the freezer and fresh parsnips to roast. Instead of mashed tatties I’m thinking of Adam Byatt’s pommes boulangere.

I love the refried beans recipe in Joe Yohan’s book Cool Beans, in the Molletes recipe. It has cumin, chile powder, and surprisingly, cinnamon and lime for a nuance of flavor that meld together and really makes the refried beans taste😘
Yesterday I used @ranchogordo.bsky.social midnight black beans.

Just put together David’s star anise and ginger braised chicken in the pot to slow cooker for tonight’s dinner. First meal since New Year’s with real food other than broth and BRAT diet foods and first meal I’ve cooked since coming home from SFe.

Made this soup past night, I didn’t have any greens but used a head if fennel and added some cooked chicken breast. Making the aromatic paste ahead of time and freezing it is a nice tip, be sure to make extra to freeze. www.foodandwine.com/recipes/rest...
Restorative Ginger and Turmeric Noodle Soup
Soothing ginger, healing turmeric, and cooling coconut milk infuse this restorative soup with bold flavor from cookbook author Hetty McKinnon.

Trying to decide whether to combat post-Thanksgiving sloth by a trip into town to visit Chocolate Maven, Kakawa, and Senor Murphy, aka The Great Chocolate Tour continues, or stay here, hang out in the jacuzzi, and then bake cookies.

My friend crafted this beautiful apple pie for 6 hours, it was….incredible…amazing…luscious! Sugar free, and vegan crust but you would never guess, #fodmap (but I put whipped cream on it). Pumpkin pie and lemon shortbread from Chocolate Maven.
