The right art - and the right person - at the right time can be so influential in a child's life. I ran into her years later at a local Pagan event. She still had my poems.

Relatedly, since I'm already reminiscing about this teacher, she also encouraged me to write. After she praised a poem I turned in for an assignment, I showed even more I had written to her, and she helped me select, polish, and publish several of them.

Nearly as influential, the same teacher also gifted to me at the end of that school year an unabridged copy of Les Miserables. This was my first experience pushing through a book that was above my skill level, and it made me a better reader. It was also quite politically radicalizing.

The Golden Compass had a moral complexity to it that was unlike anything I had ever read before - and then something strange happened. I felt ashamed reading these books around my (extremely conservative) family. So I questioned that shame - and then I started questioning everything else.
