The uptick of romance only bookstores opening is because small, independent bookstores have shown nothing but contempt for romance readers. Many independent bookstores don't even have a romance section. It's a slap in the face to a giant segment of the publishing industry.

This is actually the biggest turnoff in a bookstore. Alienating an entire consumer base, especially when they are some of the most avid purchases of your product, is a wild sales strategy.
It's always disappointing when I visit a city's beloved indie bookstore and they have sections for horror, mystery, and thriller, but no romance section. I don't understand not stocking one of the best selling genres there is!
