After the fall of the Ancien Régime and the start of the French Revolution, the Civil Constitution of the Clergy was declared in 1790, which required priests to swear an oath of allegiance to the state. Latreille failed to do so and was therefore imprisoned in November 1793 under threat of execution.[2] When the prison's doctor inspected the prisoners, he was surprised to find Latreille scrutinising a beetle on the dungeon floor.[1] When Latreille explained that it was a rare insect, the physician was impressed, and sent the insect to a 15-year-old local naturalist, Jean Baptiste Bory de Saint-Vincent. Bory de St.-Vincent knew Latreille's work, and managed to obtain the release of Latreille and one of his cell-mates.[1] Latreille and Bory de Saint-Vincent remained life-long friends.[3] The beetle had been described by Johan Christian Fabricius in 1775,[4] but recognising it had saved Latreille from likely demise, as all the other inmates were dead within one month.[1]

The first use of rubber was by the indigenous cultures of Mesoamerica. The earliest archeological evidence of the use of natural latex from the Hevea tree comes from the Olmec culture, in which rubber was first used for making balls for the Mesoamerican ballgame. Rubber was later used by the Maya and Aztec cultures: in addition to making balls, Aztecs used rubber for other purposes, such as making containers and making textiles waterproof by impregnating them with the latex sap.

Cultural associations In classical Chinese, the word 藻 is used both for "algae" and (in the modest tradition of the imperial scholars) for "literary talent". The third island in Kunming Lake beside the Summer Palace in Beijing is known as the Zaojian Tang Dao (藻鑒堂島), which thus simultaneously means "Island of the Algae-Viewing Hall" and "Island of the Hall for Reflecting on Literary Talent".

Alive forever and ever and ever, biomachinery breaking down without death, proteins resurrected through galvanic current, pharmaceutical shockwave, skin recursively sloughing open in mandelbrot wounds, eternal life without living. We have the technology, they say. Calcium and titanium and saline and blood. Bones break and reform again and again and again until they lose their shape entirely. What is the role of a body which can no longer keep its own shape? A self-perpetuating cycle which can no longer perpetuate? Malignant cells bloom and are destroyed by chemistry and incision. Death screams from just out of reach, but its influence is always felt. Hold it all together with suture and wire, surgical glue and medical epoxy. Replace what fails with a less-functional surrogate, always growing in bulk as the flesh itself withers. All vampires are real, but the blood has only ever been money, and they do not hunt, but wait until their prey delivers itself to them. Eternal life, for a price, of course. All the lines in all the graphs trend inexorably downwards, but the inevitable can always be delayed a little further. Wouldn't you still like another year, another month, another day? Living forever isn't cheap. How much will you give, they say, until the question becomes, how much do you have left?
