On this holiday week I want to express gratitude for our land. I’ve spent time on public land around Las Cruces and in the Gila and Santa Fe national forests this year. With forces closing in that mean to do so many of us harm, these places have energized me for the fight. /3

We voted today! If you haven’t yet, you get one more chance on Tuesday. There are important local races and funding questions on the ballot across New Mexico.

While hunting oryx today my dad and I encountered one of the biggest Western diamondbacks I’ve ever seen. It rattled at me from 30 feet away to ask me to keep my distance. I did.

There was no danger to any of us so I took some photos before leaving it alone.

Look at that rattle! Con mucho respeto.

I obtained some additional details about Project Jupiter’s economic predictions today in response to a records request. We’re still awaiting contracts that would turn pledges into requirements, but in the meantime the newly released numbers are worth sharing. /1

At least two government agencies have signed non-disclosure agreements with the developers of Project Jupiter. That revelation raises lots of questions and is concerning to the N.M. Foundation for Open Government, which is calling for the release of the NDAs. /1

In my second piece about Project Jupiter, the massive proposal to build a campus of data centers in Santa Teresa, I urge county commissioners to focus on our people, who are the reason we seek economic development projects, as they consider approval. /1

I just published my 4,500-word investigative report and commentary about Project Jupiter, the massive proposal to build a campus of data centers in Santa Teresa. In addition to the long read, there’s an audio version you can listen to if that fits your schedule better. /1

There’s lots of misinformation out there about gerrymandering. It’s getting traction on the opinion page of the state’s largest newspaper, among other places. So this week I’m sharing some history about redistricting that puts the current war in context. /1

I wanted to get out of my head this week to see how others are feeling now that we’re several months into Trump’s second term in office. I asked seven people who are deep in the fight to save our democracy to answer a few questions. /1

The Trump Administration is no longer pretending that its mass deportation efforts aren’t racist. It’s recruiting folks to work for its goon squad using Nazi-coded messaging. /1

A new report documents, for the first time, the collapse of local journalism. The number of journalists covering our communities has dropped by more than 75 percent since 2002. Not surprisingly, it’s even worse in New Mexico. /1

Albuquerque voters have a clear choice for mayor between candidates who will oppose the federal government’s oppression of immigrants and another candidate, Darren White, who supports extremism and cruelty. /1

Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the New York City mayoral Democratic primary was remarkable. The reaction among too many establishment Democrats who are worried about upsetting their billionaire overlords is predictable. /1

The floods in Texas clearly illustrate that President Donald Trump and climate change are both causing more people to die. Trump’s contributions to the suffering are needless. /1

Policing is a good example. Local law enforcement often follows what’s happening at the federal level. It’s really important we watchdog our local and state police agencies to ensure they don’t act like the goon squads Trump has roaming streets across the United States. /2
