A by-election is taking place today for the East Sussex County Council seat of Ashdown and Conquest, following the death of Cllr Peter Pragnell in September.

Poll cards have been sent to those registered to vote in the ward.

Polling stations will be open until 10pm tonight.

The Severe Weather Emergency Provision (SWEP) has been activated in Hastings.

The council has been working with Warming Up The Homeless to provide a place of overnight safety for rough sleepers during the severe weather.

Hastings Neighbourhood Board has thanked almost 2,000 people who responded to their online survey and the hundreds they spoke to across Hastings over the summer. Feedback will be used to put together four-year and ten-year plans to submit to the government by 28 November.

Last night, dedicated volunteer Graham Furness was presented with this year's Order of 1066 Award, recognising his exceptional and longstanding service to Hastings.

The award was presented at Hastings Town Hall by the Mayor, Cllr Becca Horn, as part of the annual Hastings Week celebrations.

An updated housing allocations policy takes effect from Monday 20 October, aimed at making the best use of available housing for Hastings’ residents.

The policy changes will be made in stages, and everyone affected will be contacted by housing officers to explain what the changes mean to them.

We have now closed applications to the Household Support Fund as we have received enough to spend the remaining funding.

The team will be working through the applications we received but were unable to pay in the summer and the new applications over the coming days.

Hastings Half Marathon is happening on Sunday, 5 October with road closures around the course.

The race starts at 10.30am from Sea Road and there will be rolling road closures along the route to keep the runners safe. Roads will be closed until 1pm.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) are encouraging those who live, work and visit East Sussex and Brighton and Hove to have their say about plans for the future.

The consultation will run until 31 October 2025 and asks for views on its draft Community Risk Management Plan (CRMP).
