When I was growing up autistic kids were "hyper" or "had water on the brain" and there was always a raft of "weird kids" who were socially ostracized because they had a hard time people-ing. If you don't think autism existed before it was commonly called "autism," it's because you chose not to see.
My dad truly believed that people just didn't have autism when he was growing up and I had to be the one to break it to him that autistic people who didn't fit in WERE PUT INTO INSTITUTIONS

why is everyone so much smarter than me i was so happy about getting a 224 and everyone else around me is “234! oh i got 250! ohh i got 227!” LITERALLY FUCKING DIE IM SUPPOSED TO BE THE SMART ONE HERE. IN THIS GRADE IM SUPPOSED TO BE SMART WHY IS EVERYONE BETTER THAN ME AT ACTUALLY EVERYTHING.
