it's been hard to put this feeling into words, but we've spent the past couple of decades being lectured to and patronized by an elite class that spent its free time joshing with jeffrey epstein about his little sex abuse empire while lecturing us about how out of touch we are

BARELY LEGAL MEANS, LIKE, TURNED 18 YESTERDAY
15 IS FIRMLY ILLEGAL
Megyn Kelly: "I know somebody very close to this case…Jeffrey Epstein, in this person's view, was not a pedophile…He was into the barely legal type, like he liked 15 year old girls…He wasn't into like 8 year olds…There's a difference between a 15 year old and a 5 year old."

This gives weight to my theory that the "Cow Tools" drawing takes place in the Predator universe. The cow (consider her stern visage) is preparing herself for the final confrontation, much like Arnie in the original movie. Once she is ready, she'll summon him with a defiant "Moooooo..."

I had a wildly bad day yesterday, so J took me out to the movies to cheer me up. We saw Predator: Badlands and my dudes, dudettes, and dudexxes, it's fucking GOOD.

Predator: Badlands movie review (2025) | Roger Ebert
An exceptional sci-fi action thriller with memorable characters and lead performances that deserve to be included in discussions of the year's best.

You know it's a hot presentation when one section of my outline is labeled "algorithm bullshit."
I SHOULD be preparing for my presentation for tonight's big holiday staff meeting, but meh. It's more fun to run around with new books.

Wasn't planning on logging on today until i got an email from my boss pointing out a mistake on one of the graphics I made, so I guess I'm working today.

And doing laundry. And waiting for the electrician. And making soup. And thinking about making bread.

THIS IS NOT AN EXAGGERATION, PELOSI AND SCHUMER LITERALLY OFFERED TRUMP $25 BILLION DOLLARS TO BUILD HIS DUMBASS BORDER WALL IN 2018, THEY DO NOT DISAGREE WITH HIM!!!
You gotta remember, most Dem leadership doesn’t disagree with Trump politically and only wishes he was more polite.

basically every 2024 truism is dead. Trump did not build a lasting multiracial coalition or turn young men into committed Republicans. You don’t need to cave on trans rights to win. The pundits have nothing left to tell you.

Me, preparing new releases for the week: Oh my god, who gives a shit about Paul McCartney?
The bookbuyer: I do.
Me: Yeah... my mom probably does too.

The bookbuyer hasn't talked to me this morning since. Whoops.

At risk of starting up an old flame war, I would argue that the week between Christmas and the New Year is spookier than Halloween. Halloween is good scary, like an enjoyable horror movie, while the last week of December is weird and liminal and feels much more like something could ~leak through~
I know October is over but listen, there’s no reason we can’t extend spooky season all the way to Christmas. Who’s going to stop us? Mariah Carey? The guardian of holiday cheer and all things jolly? Possibly… but we won’t know if we don’t try.

WHAT MANuAL LABOR JObS
WHAT MANUAL LAbOR JOBS EXIST IN 2025 IN The NUMBERS TO REPLACE DESK JOBS
“Humans can just go get manual labor jobs if desk jobs are repaired with AI” is both not going to suffice to provide enough jobs and is also going to result in massive societal anger because manual labor jobs often *are terrible*, which is why people have worked hard to avoid them for generations.
Even if society provided the food/shelter level needs for everyone, humans also need to perform useful work just for basic fulfillment. The vast majority of people cannot sit around all day letting AI and robots do everything.

(The definition of “useful work” here is malleable but still essential)

Find yer books!
If anyone lost a bag of books from LRB Bookshop on the Metropolitan Line between Baker St- Watford, I handed it to a cleaner when the train terminated at Watford tube station. And if you have far more followers than me, please share this status. LRB bookshop is not cheap!

ANywAY, I finally got around to listening to the Tron: Ares soundtrack yesterday.

Now, I've said before that the Tron: Legacy soundtrack is Daft Punk's best album and I am still willing to die on that hill. And I've been a NIN fan since Downward Spiral, so I was really looking forward to it.

I feel like I'm always making this argument- whether it's Rowling or Gaiman or some other fucking creep- read fucking widely! Stop letting so much of your self definition be molded by being a fan of one single person or IP.
Adults, please. As a bookseller I am begging you- read another fucking book. One actually written for adults would be a good goddamned choice!
Also Harry Potter adults really ought to be ostracised and I mean that with my whole chest because if you can casually support it then that means you’re cool with supporting its creator against trans folks so please go house sort yourself into a bin where you belong.

WHAT
November 2, 2025 at 7:18 PM
Deeply deeply DEEPLY regretting donating money to Warnock's campaign.
(And if you come at me with THE DEMOCRATS DON'T SUPPORT TRUMP! please read the thread that OP was replying to. Democratic elected officials certainly support him.)
November 2, 2025 at 7:03 PM
There's a lot to unpack when it comes to "why do Democrats support Trump" and two of the BIG causes are the failure of the two party system and the fact that corporations can more-or-less buy candidates.
But Trump doesn’t represent the status quo. He represents a huge shift to the right. He represents the end of democracy. The end of human rights. The ends of citizens rights. Potentially the end of the civil rights act itself. this isn’t a time for a compromise.

My siblings aren't emergency contacts listed for my kiddo's school, but my best friend certainly is!
Wait, are people really upset that Mamdani spoke about his “aunt,” and it was actually his father’s cousin and not his father’s sibling?

Because that is an extremely normal thing a lot of cultures do. Including a lot of large Jewish families!
In a bit of a tense moment, one of the La Mega co-hosts presses Mamdani on why he "lied" about his "aunt" having been scared to ride the subway after 9/11 while wearing a hijab.

Mamdani says it was "not a lie" because he refers to his father's cousin as his "aunt."
