Midwestern writer, movie watcher, perv about town. He/him. Here as mental health allows, but don't count on it. Trans himbo. Writing lives on my site: harmcox.ghost.io. I don't DM but I do reply to Venmo @harmcoxrules.
There is a scene in the movie where Mother congratulates a synth for capturing a specimen by saying "we are truly building better worlds" and all i could think of was the titular line sketch

if i had a dollar for every time my new name appeared on a dark-humored HBO comedy show helmed by a beloved Comedy Yeller, i would have two dollars!!!

Today in transmasculinity: after a lifetime of my weird deadname never appearing anywhere, i am unsure whether to be weirded out or delighted by THE CHAIR FACTORY's inclusion of a character named "Bahld Harmon."

BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935) felt like a howl of pain this year. A monster tormented by the society he yearns for, a woman made from scraps meant to satiate his appetite. Neither gets an actual choice, neither has a real chance at the love and acceptance they seek. In this world, they belong dead.

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (1986) was my favorite movie when I was a kid and it is still very good. I related to Seymour and was in love with Audrey, just like every other transmasculine dork. Aside from that, it's a great musical with a cool puppet that hates rich people as much as I do.

If Democrats were an actual opposition party, more would point out that SNAP is real money and food retail businesses rely on it to stay open. Food retailers in low-resource areas are about to lose 40 million customers before the biggest grocery shopping days of the year. How will they survive?

I always adore BRIDE, and seeing it in 35mm was a special treat. Today i was particularly taken with Dr. Pretorious, the villanous homosexual mad scientist who serves as the namesake for the villanous pansexual mad scientist in FROM BEYOND. The brotherhood of evil gays is strong in the mad sciences.

DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978) is the first horror movie I got obsessed with. It's an incredible film- Romero's worldbuilding and his deep understanding of human nature take it from a grueling gorefest to a genuinely moving experience. I did not know horror could do what it does before I watched this film.

SMILEY FACE (2007) is the rarest trifecta of stoner films: actually funny, avoids dumb stoner cliches, and refreshingly accurate about the terrors of being too high in public. An intricate and v. Silly two-hour farce led by Faris, who deserves WAY more love for this performance. Araki has the range!

I'm gonna finish this, damnit! THE BIRDS (1963) is one of my favorite Hitchcocks. Famous for its bird attack sequences, which are still surprisingly effective 50 years later. But it also deserves love for its weird sense of humor, gorgeous visuals, and an incredible first outing for Tippi Hedren.

I love you, Chicago.

HIS GIRL FRIDAY (1940): Finally made it to one of those damn Howard Hawks matinees at Music Box. The 4k restoration of a classic screwball comedy was worth getting up early. Seeing these old movies in a theater makes all the difference. Repertory theaters are a great reason to live in Chicago.

At least i look cool today.

28 YEARS LATER (2025): i expected it to slap, i didn't expect it to be a stirring anti-fascist text. A mid-2000s zombie franchise reanimated as quality English folk horror w/a biting critique of right-wing isolationism and patriarchal violence. Maybe the best franchise return since FURY ROAD?

An aside, but it is very funny that two horror movies were made in the mid-90s in an extremely similar way, and one of those movies is PERFECT BLUE and the other one is CASTLE FREAK.

(thank you to @toomanymouths.bsky.social for putting me down this rabbit hole)

PERFECT BLUE (1997): another rewatch this year that blew me away. An anime/J-pop culture slasher about a stalker seeking revenge on his favorite idol for her efforts to change her image slowly dissolves into a nightmarish meditation on bodies and identity. If you liked THE SUBSTANCE, watch this too.

DOCTOR JEKYLL AND SISTER HYDE (1971) is a 70's Hammer movie about a scientist who accidentally invents HRT and turns himself into Martine Beswick somehow? We should all be so lucky. Visually luscious and deeply silly, a terrible film full of exquisitely made camp for horror-loving transsexuals.

I AM MY OWN WOMAN (1992) was my first Rosa von Prauheim. The story of a trans woman in 1930s Germany, and the ways community helped her survive. I am writing about it so i don't want to say much, but it's incredible and I think trans folks feeling overwhelmed by Our Current Times should watch it.

TOKYO GORE POLICE (2007) was a rewatch that very pleasantly surprised me. The body horror effects are bananas, but I was more taken by the dark humor that comes from the Verhoven-esque capitalist dystopia it takes place in. It's a clever film with a dumb, horny heart. Also, Alligator Girl rules.

GLORY, HOLE (2023) an incredible short horror film from Ireland. A trans dude plans to violently confront his rapist while his friend struggles to intercede. Harrowing to watch, visually fascinating, has haunted me since. Hiram Harrington has the juice.

GRAPES OF DEATH (1978): i need to watch more Jean Rollin stuff. Picked this based on the weird title. I was rewarded with a wild euro-eco-horror nightmare where a pesticide turns a vineyard town into zombies. Ponderous, beautiful and deeply gross. Feels like watching a bad dream in the best way.
October 15, 2025 at 12:41 AM
THE SHINING FORWARDS AND BACKWARDS (2011): exactly what it sounds like. Two separate edit tracks of THE SHINING running over each other, one backwards and one forwards, at varied opacities throughout. Sounds gimmicky, but it's creepy and cool and a great way to re-discover a well-tread film.
October 15, 2025 at 12:22 AM
HOLY TRINITY (2019): a queer dominatrix huffs a fancy hippie roomspray that lets her speak to the dead. A rambling and campy psychedelic satire of moderm queerness, including one of my favorite BDSM relationships I've seen in a movie. Great work from Theo Germaine, too.

I'm trying to distract myself from some bad news right now, so please ask me about movies. For additional challenge, I will only talk about movies I have seen in the previous year. (I watch a lot of movies, so it'll be fine.)

pov: every artist and writer you know realizing that social media is collapsing into a bog of rich arrogant dumb-dumbs, leaving us the option of continuing to exploit ourselves on the extremely off-chance we go "viral" OR opting out and resigning ourselves to regional lit mag poverty and obscurity
