I see the spaced em dash all the time in American writing. For example, it's the house style at the New York Times.

Twelve years ago today we came home to this crime scene. We were never able to identify the perpetrator: we couldn't lift usable fingerprints, and DNA analysis bafflingly suggested a sheep was involved.
