Very true. Where I did my undergrad the same was true for GR. It was taught, alternating between astrophysicists and theoretical physicists, year after year. You basically had to pick the year that was good for you.

Quantum as in "solve the Schrödinger equation for an electron in an infinitely deep potential well" etc., I found rather useless. But decent (sub-) atomic physics is quite necessary, I think. Radiative transfer is all about that, after all.
