I'd guess most of my Asian American friends are comfortable with both depending on the context. At an AAPI film festival there's a strong feeling of solidarity. At a bar, we might lean into the differences between ethnicities, and toss barbed comments jokingly based on stereotypes at each other.

That’s interesting - is it that ppl prefer another term, or is it that they don’t like the idea of differentiation?

lol yes. I just tried to explain what a film camera is to my five year old nephew, not sure I succeeded.
