Today we went to London Zoo and learned about Komodo Dragons. And now I have one question:
- who would win in a fight, a Komodo dragon or a Hippo?

Just a turkey and some pie.

Getting in four weeks before Christmas meant the Advent study started today, and I’m so delighted that week one went well, because I really wasn’t sure how it would land.

As we come to the annual bric-a-brac, I am once again tempted to paraphrase Tamsin Greig in Black Books

‘Good gosh, I do sell a lot of crap’

Also, someone tell me which box ‘clergy person’ goes into.

Spent a few minutes sat today in the Moses chapel at Notre Dame, transfixed by this piece, given the utterly garbage anti-migrant policy the British government are putting forward.

Steak frites in Paris is a classic for a reason (and that reason is that they can cook a steak like you want it

One of the lovelier treats of going to the ballet at the Opera House is when you casually find yourself at a world premiere. Cathy Marston’s Against the Tide was beautiful and melancholy (and very Of My Mood). And so nice to see Matty Ball and William Bracewell dance together.

What local bookshops sell is delightfully indicative of the differences in their areas.

My lovely bookshop in Kew has never ever tried to sell me John Crowley. Sydenham, however…

Cornish fishing trawler time travel movie FTW. Mark Jenkin’s Rose of Nevada was a beautiful thing that will probably have a long life scratching round my brain.

See, for comparison. Dressing Gown like Dressing Gown.

I've really only just now registered that Leo in OBAA is wearing a variant of Arthur Dent's dressing gown. I love it and I will now insist that PTA made this choice deliberately.

No one is more excited than a hairdresser when you say, “pls bob my hair”

But I did return home to this! So looking forward to spending some time with it this autumn, thank you, @hannareichel.bsky.social

I truly commend spa days off to y’all. I am now ready to run straight through the autumn and into advent.

I’m reading Edmund de Waal’s ‘An Archive’

How is a page of titles so weirdly fascinating?

Booked a spa and massage for next week, walked across the downs in the sun, now coffee and cake and a book. A plus day off vibes.

A contains most of France so it cannot be the lowest choice (leaving aside my personal view that being rude about British food is a lazy stereotype)

I’m going D, B, E, A, G, F, C, H (sorry Canada).

It turned out I had enough time to go to the Secession and see the Beethoven Frieze, so now we can play, ‘which figure matches your vibe today.’

I’m adding Alma Mahler-Werfe to my list of guests I’d have at one of those imaginary dinner parties, because I’m dying to know what she had going on that made men go fully crazy.

Like, Kokoschka did *what* (read the sign in full)

The waiter was *very* complementary about my lunch order, and I have to say, he wasn’t wrong to be.
September 6, 2025 at 11:51 AM
Anyway, thanks to @davidbunce.bsky.social for recommending I come up here.

St Wolfgang is full of swish hotels along the lakeside, which means (a) it’s hard to get to the lakeside (boo) and (b) you look off the church’s terrace over the lake in one direction and get a view of a hotel hot tub on the lakeside
September 5, 2025 at 10:21 AM
*not* the weather for going up things or long yomps around things (although the cloud is trying for drama), so I’m pottering around St Wolfgang, aka sitting in the Wallfahrtskirche going 😮

I am in actual awe of the skill of perfectly soft boiling and peeling two eggs and presenting them in a glass bowl.

Breakfast at the Cafe Bazaar in Salzburg is something straight out of Graham Greene.
