#Archaeology for a #biodiversitycrisis, #heritage for a #climate positive future. Optimist. #Pleistocene archaeologist, rugby coach, knitter, former public servant, now doing what I can in a large #conservation NGO with #landusechange and IRO research.
I'm at a secondary school for my youngest football game and spotted this on the canteen wall. Such excellent #climate education and leadership. I wish more restaurants would do this.

New fav artefact is either this silk viking bonnet from York, or Alfred's cake fungus from Star Carr used to curate an ember 11,000 yrs ago - something I tried with Explorer Scouts a few weeks ago (it works amazingly well!). #YorkshireMuseum spoiling us with exhibitions at the moment, do go visit!

Travelling north from King's Cross for @archaeologyuk.bsky.social. Something about station war memorials - ordinary men with ordinary jobs so far from conflict who found themselves thrust into the horror of war. Thinking of them & all those currently caught in conflict around the world.

A brief visit to Hamford Water and Beaumont Quay today. Apparently these stones were once part of London Bridge, and now provide a pretty idyllic launch point for paddle boards and crab lines. buildinglondon.blog/2022/02/25/3...

A fab day out helping @rspbscotland.bsky.social @bumblebeetrust.bsky.social #Balmoral rangers survey for rare invertebrates today. Our 10 yr old was chuffed to find the first broken-belted bumblebee recorded on the estate, sadly no small scabious mining bees but several dark bordered beauty moths.

I was trying to work out what tragedy this collection of memorials commemorated, an Internet search later & I now know these are from actual people for a fictional character shot in an episode of Peaky Blinders filmed here in Portsoy c.2021.
Which other memorials to fictional people are there?

Today @nattrustarch.bsky.social colleagues gathered at the beautiful Barrington Court to learn how to use our GPR (ground penetrating radar) to see if we could find any evidence of an earlier house. Beautiful day for it! @catlodge.bsky.social

Anyone need a timeline cleanse? I recorded this on a walk in my local woods in the rain today. I didn't see another soul. You'll have to imagine the smell as the rain hit the ground.
Turn the sound on for full rainfall in English woodland sound.

So Languard Point is pretty special. And another #HeritageNature mash up. Bird observatory in a G1 Listed Fort. Sadly we couldn't find the turtle doves listed on the recently seen board but we did get a rainbow.

As if Sutton Hoo wasn't enough, the icing on the cake was a visit to the Hoo Ship Company construction site in Woodbridge where a replica of the #SuttonHoo ship is being coaxed lovingly into being from tree trunks. The smell, the sound and the sight is extraordinary. Do go and visit!

Really impressed by @nationaltrust.org.uk #SuttonHoo Now is the perfect time to visit w/ new exhibition 'The Dig' & @timeteam.bsky.social @nattrustarch.bsky.social excavations. One of the top archaeological visits in UK. Lovely attention to detail incl. dig themed cushions! #archaeoembroidery

Love a plant with a story. This is 'hoary cress' @the-wildlifetrusts.bsky.social #Essex #Whetmead nature reserve, #Witham. Claimed to have been introduced in bedding of sick soldiers returning from fighting Napoleons troops in a miserable Netherlands campaign referred to as the Walcheren Debarcle.

This morning, before the long train ride back to the south, was people watching at Castlerigg stone circle. In the name of research. For more info heritagerecords.nationaltrust.org.uk/HBSMR/MonRec...

A sneaky @nationaltrust.org.uk trip over the wall to #BordersForestTrust site #Carrifran. Fab woodland creation & even more extraordinary #RottonBottomBow - oldest bow in UK. 6000yr old yew bow found in 1990s - associated pollen record informed the planting. bordersforesttrust.org/wild-heart/c...

Can anyone tell me anything about the archaeological work that's been going on at the Vrana Old Town in Croatia? Looks like it's gridded out for recording and excavation. Such a great place, I'd live to know more!

Love the sign at Vransko Jezero nature reserve, Vrna Lake, Croatia.
