Turn on the caps? 100% yes, for the benefit of everyone at every level of UK higher education’s system

Among the thoughtful things I’m grateful for on arrival: a little room of my own in the Weston Library.

My first week in Oxford as a visiting fellow is underway! Coming from one of the ‘have-not’ universities, the disparity in UK higher ed feels pretty overwhelmingly stark. I just wish the former polytechnics and the post-92s could resource care for students and researchers like they can here.

So glad to attend the launch of @cathamclarke.bsky.social’s thought provoking new History of England in 25 Poems last night, which explores the ‘polyvocality’ of England’s voices, truths, and agendas. A very insightful read so far from an outstanding scholar.

Summer flu…. having a fever during a London heatwave is something I don’t recommend! Had a literal fever dream where my cat was directing episodes of a hit BBC show. She has great instincts as a filmmaker.

This is an awfully nice place to visit.

Popping in for a quick trip ahead of my @bodleian.ox.ac.uk visiting fellowship this year

I was given the full collectors set of these wonderful @royalhistsoc.org badges today. The ultimate accessory for canvas library bags. Take that A.I.! You can try take our jobs, but you can’t take our badges. (Yet. I think.)

Is… is he giving a pretext and justification for using nuclear weapons to ‘end war’?

This is not a safe road.

Immigrants aren’t the problem. Othering immigrants is a deliberate strategy to encourage people to hate each other rather than examine what severe wealth inequality is doing to our societies.

‘Fascism talks ideology, but it is really just marketing- marketing for power.’ Wise words from Toni Morrison worth revisiting, from her essay on Racism and Fascism.

Essential, valuable social sciences and history education available for free from Harvard.

Years of arguments that these are ‘low value’ subjects has enabled anti-democratic politics. This knowledge and learning is essential for good citizenship.

Some actual imperialist nonsense posted by @economist.com today on Instagram. How about we don’t just capitulate to expansionist delusions?

It’s the 60th anniversary of Dr Martin Luther King preaching at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, and the cathedral is celebrating with a brilliant series of free events and workshops with writers, theologians and church leaders.
