And of course as a consequence of disorganised ‘contraction’ the U.K. will lose valuable research in areas that have been marked as excellent because of lack of coherence to this.

But also: I don’t see how this doesn’t hurt them politically with huge numbers of voters.

Yes, universities were one of the precious few globally significant sectors of the U.K. economy. (You can put culture/film/arts in that bucket as well, which is being similarly neglected.)

This doesn’t make sense economically as unis are engines of growth, but also politically. 👋 Labour voters?
