Naturalist. Norfolk. Mostly wandering about looking at invertebrates with Kevin Radley (in which case all photos his) or observing the creatures in my garden.
Some attractive leaf mines seen today in the Yare Valley.
A Beech leaf with Stigmella tityrella and Phyllonorycter messaniella mines. A Hazel leaf with what I believe is a Stigmella microtheriella mine.

Disturbed this Brimstone (Gonepteryx rhamni) whilst trimming Bramble back in the garden today. It settled back further in and we'll be careful to avoid that area from now on so that it can over-winter in peace. (photo taken as it was getting dark) #brimstone #hibernation

This has surely been a 'Clouded Yellow year' but very pleased to have one in our Breckland garden today. A first for here and the best views I've ever had of one!

4 commonly seen invertebrates in & around fens. Amber Snail (Succinea putris),
Spiked Shield-bug (Picromerus bidens)
Milky Slug (Deroceras agreste) and Drinker (Euthrix potatoria).
I believe D. agreste is restricted to the Yare Valley in Norfolk. All photos taken on phone so not great!

This is a slight cheat as it's not a recent photograph! I found this photo I'd taken a couple of years ago in Surlingham of a
?Ormyrus nitidulus and thought it's such a smart beast I had to post it! Not something I've encountered before or since, this individual was on my car. #hymenoptera

Carabus granulatus preying on a Succinea putris (Amber Snail) about 50 cm above ground level showing that not all 'ground beetles' follow the rules!
Also seen yesterday in the Yare Valley numerous Phragmatobia fuliginosa (Ruby Tiger) cats & Picromerus bidens.

The Grey Dagger (Acronicta psi) larva is now fully grown and looking rather magnificent.

Another day another charming moth larva! Saw good numbers of Ruby Tiger (Phragmatobia fuliginosa) cats today in the Ant Valley, most apparently 'basking' in the sunshine.

Very tatty but still a beauty, this Convolvulus Hawk-moth (Agrius convolvuli) was attracted into our garden polytunnel by the Nicotiana sylvestris that's growing in there.

I've seen more Earwigs in the last 3 weeks than in the last 3 years put together. The species had a dramatic collapse in numbers around here so it's fantastic to see them again.
There's a v interesting paper 'Recent drop in numbers of the Common Earwig' by J. Murray in the Ent. Rec Vol. 137 Part 4

Kevin found this single hindwing today in the Yare Valley. Turns out he and I are both good at finding leftover bits of Clifden Nonpareil...still not seen a whole one!

Intrigued to know the identity of the moth larvae feeding on a Diascia I've planted by the house I reared a few to find out.
5 Beautiful Plumes Amblyptilia acanthadactyla emerged yesterday. I've seen the imagines plenty of times but not the equally remarkable looking pupae.

Saw this beautiful large Hoverfly - Sericomyia silentis (Yellow-barred Peat Fly) today in Barton Turf. Not one we often encounter.

Marpissa muscosa or Fencepost Jumping Spider, a beautifully marked spider that I've seen a couple of times on my rabbits' run!

Picromerus bidens seen last weekend in the Ant Valley. This species is a well known predator of other insect larvae, especially those of lepidoptera. We've seen P. bidens predating Swallowtails Papilio machaon on several occasions.
A widespread Shieldbug, oddly I've only seen it in the Broads.

My favourite invertebrate as a child was the 22 Spot Ladybird (Psyllobora vigintiduopunctata) and it's still in my top ten!
Spotted this larva today at Barton Turf.

Last weekend I went to look for White Admiral (Limenitis camilla) larvae in a North Norfolk wood. It was great to find 7 in just a couple of hours of searching. All the Honeysuckle looked wilted, wonder if drought will affect success of the cats.
Fuzzy phone pic shows leaf better than my TG-6 did!
