We’ve now produced a toolkit to guide science communicators through (critically) using certain strategies. It has been beautifully illustrated by @jordancollver.bsky.social (in collab with @rikworth.bsky.social) and can be downloaded as a PDF here:

We asked whether they used these strategies and what opportunities or risks these strategies (which are often used in misinformation and conspiracies) might hold for science communication.

So great to finally see this in print! My piece about Arthur C. Clarke's typewriter which is held in the Science Fiction Special Collections in Liverpool. It appears in "Collecting Stories", a volume by @livunipress.bsky.social about objects held in the cultural collections at the university.

Just taking a trip down memory lane when Blair tried to do this. Here's a photo of some protesters from 2003 when all photographs were taken with potatoes.

Thank you to all that contributed to our Voyager exhibit today and created golden records at the British Science Festival! Some of my favourites are here, but I know I missed many so I'll be going through them once I've recovered a bit! @britsciassoc.bsky.social

I'm a serious adult academic, so of course I've spent the last few days making Voyager 1 out of papier mache and bottle tops... See you tomorrow, British Science Festival @britsciassoc.bsky.social!!!

Had so much fun at the weekend at Destination (an unofficial Star Trek convention) talking about the linguistics of First contact! Thanks so much to @jamiebgall.co.uk for organising! So exciting to see so many people engaging in science through fiction and culture!

I'm presenting a paper in the Sustainability and biodiversity session today at #PCST2025. "Anthropomorphising ecology: investigating social information bias with non-human characters". I'll be talking trees and graphs, if you like that kind of thing. 11:45 AM in Conference Suite 4.

This paper is predicting the loss of [ʊ] in FOOT with southern pronunciation [ʌ] taking over the North by 2066. So I'm now going to refuse to die to maintain /fʊt/ and you should too. iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...
