Finally, cutting all recommended custodial sentences in half except for violent and serious sexual offenders. Offending rates would not increase and the world could live with the mock outrage.

I agree. Resourcing the current system is first. Abolishing custody of less than one year is next (with a failsafe to stop one year one day!) Then - Judges insisting on their right and duty to list cases regardless of artificial limits on sitting days.

One might say their abolition was a disaster for the UK. Doesn’t seem to have solved the housing shortages. Just put everything out of ordinary reach.

Well…of course they should be sitting. But not enough judges, barristers, court staff and prisoner transport staff to let it happen.
