Catch feelings, catch flights
Catch dreams, catch hikes
I was in a perfect position to catch the drive back during sunset if I left immediately so I just went for it. And since all the mapping apps still thought the pass was closed, it was empty. It was just myself and the wildlife out there. I saw no other cars for like 30 miles. It was fantastic.

Sonora Pass was closed on my way up, but had re-opened six hours earlier. I had kind of hoped to try to come back via a different pass than I came up on and so I took the opportunity before it closed for the season. I actually prefer Sonora to Tioga, both are beautiful, but I stand by it.

The hike down was fast and easy, and on flat terrain I’d likely been okay, but this hike wasn’t that. Even the comparatively mellow beginning of the hike goes up about 100ft every quarter mile. And it’s constant. So this trail is just more serious than I am right now.

I kept going and surprisingly it didn’t get harder as I kept climbing with lots of stops, but the outcome was still obvious. Instead of backpacking up to a lake I ended up hiking around for a few hours with a backpack and getting used to the weight. It was beautiful out there.

The weather has been hotter than usual, which is keeping the snow away and also made the trail yesterday downright hot (more than expected) especially in direct sunlight, which I hadn’t prepared for as much as the cold night. I could tell in the first quarter mile this wasn’t going to be my day.

I had a nice day out there along 395. The hike I eventually want to be able to do is along Big McGee Creek and is about a 1000m gain hike up the mountains. It’s probably outside my current abilities with a full pack on a normal day and definitely was yesterday.

As I slipped over Tioga onto the eastern side of the range it was clear I was far too tired. There’s many things I can do on two hours of sleep but this isn’t one of them. That said the window for the season is rapidly closing and I won’t be back out there for a bit so I wanted to see what I’d see.

The long stare that can only really properly come out when the last time you slept was a continent ago and it’s getting about time to fix that. #timeisasocialconstructevenmorethanusualtoday

Next steps:
* Shower
* Laundry in the machine
* Sleep
* Wake up and go to the office

The MRT is waking up which means it’s time for sleep for me ahead of my evening return flight tonight. Caught up with the cat and we gossiped a bit before turning in.

Welcome to a random Saturday in May in California where:
* Over 100% of grid load is being generated by renewables
* The emissions for the grid are net negative if you count exports displacing dirtier sources outside California
* This has been true since around 9:30 this morning

Just another day.

Right now they are running multiple systems and it’s not clear to me whether this is the new one, the old one, or an integration issue between them. www.bart.gov/about/projec...

Classic airport standoff.

You can hear the pilots thinking “this taxiway ain’t big enough for the both of us” as their hands reach down to their side to contact ground.

ORD is like sure, we have 8 runways but we’re only gonna use 2 at any one time and if you don’t like that what are you gonna do fly to Midway? Well? You’d still need takeoff clearance for that. So get in line.

Anyway we’re like 93rd in line for takeoff or something.

On my way on Amtrak's Empire Builder, I caught this picture in Havre, MT. About 32mi from the border, the folks of Havre decided the sculpture to put next to their train station would be about extending hands in friendship. May it one day feel as normal as it has in the past to love our neighbors.

Just because the main video most western media had from the 7.7M earthquake centered near Mandalay this morning was from a skyscraper in Thailand does not make the earthquake more in Thailand.

One part of why it's hard is it almost feels like saying the fire is fine—but it's not. Remaining calm working with or around fire turns out to be pretty important.

This is meant metaphorically, but I've had both metaphorical and non metaphorical experience. It’s been true for both.

Sometimes it’s helpful to break down a particularly challenging problem by staring at the ocean until the waves become your only constant and the ocean reminds you how small everything else could be. At that point you can just think until the pieces break apart between the waves.
