I've had exactly the same experiences before pothos! I've killed cacti! (No, it wasn't over watering...) I can give advice based on what I did if you want to try, but in general the main plant is cheap and pretty damn hardy!

I second pothos. Also, take cuttings and root them in water (super easy) then you can have a replacement plant. On loop. Just in case 😅
