Should fares be a larger part of budgets? Can transit ultimately be subsidized at the same level as roads, highways, and other pieces of infrastructure?

There is value in the ABQ Ride system for the people who use it here. Fare recovery wasn’t a substantial part of our funding here - and I think fare box recovery is pretty small part of agencies budgets across systems.

On man, we were 4 sure challenged by the pandemic & changes in the ABQ Ride system. Ridership is up year to year and we are still fighting attempts to bring back fares/adding ID requirements. ABQ’s goals weren’t related to reducing single occupancy cars - but in response to community demand.

We’re loving it in ABQ and want to take it statewide. The original article doest state fares as the main issue. I imagine it’s very different city to city.

Most of the anti free fares perspectives I’ve seen over-value fare box collections or suggest that people need to pay into something to care for it - I’m curious about arguments against free fares.

That’s largely what led the zero fares coalition here in Albuquerque
