My story log, I guess
84. No Country for Old Men. Felt like I was missing something with this movie. I got the whole “country is changing” idea, but wish they’d done more with the concept. Felt the tension at times, but didn’t care enough about the main character to really feel it. Bardem is utterly terrifying.

83. Phantom Thread. Beautifully shot, fantastic characters, interesting themes, amazing performances. Such an interesting twist at the end, I wish there had been a bit more built up or time to live in that situation beyond the montage at the end. One of the prettiest soundtracks of all time.

82. Hateful 8. Kind of disappointing after watching Knives Out. Wasn’t that good of a mystery, didn’t have that much tension, didn’t really care about the characters, but was definitely an entertaining watch. Wish I could have gotten more on board with it, but left me asking “what was the purpose?”

81. Knives Out 3. A fantastic rumination on Faith, with an amazing murder mystery on top. Rian Johnson continues to do very special things with this franchise, performances were fantastic, pacing was great. Not enough Andrew Scott, but if that’s my only complaint, you know it’s good.

80. Seance of Blake Manor. Good game bogged down by bad gameplay implementation. Some of the stories were interesting, others very much felt like filler. Mixed opinions, but would recommend. Loved the clue tracking system

79. Superman 2025. Just give me a movie about that dog for 2 hours. Story and acting was good, some of the CGI shots felt cheaper than usual, but the settings looked cool. Solid.

78. Wicked For Good. I like act 2 more than most, and I have a ton of nitpicks, but overall it was pretty good. I’m not sure we needed any of the good songs, and it did stand out to me more in this how much the directing was carried by the production design, but the acting is very good.

77. Frankenstein. Another banger. Acting was good, production design was STUNNING. Some of the writing was in the nose, and I feel as though this retelling doesn’t have the nuance of the book, but it’s pretty, and gets the story across very cleanly.

76. K-Pop Demon Hunters. Finally got around to it, it’s a good movie, and really great to see what’s essentially a movie musical get a lot of main stream attention. Animation was fantastic, story was simple but got the job done, the songs served their purpose better than I expected them to.

75. Zodiac. Solid film, though it felt like a precursor to Se7en despite coming out 12 years after. Good performances, interesting story, though to me it’s let down by having to hold to truth. It felt like parts needed to be heightened even more for the drama to hit.

74. The Godfather. Was a little disappointed by the ending, but overall very good. Lots of twists and turns, just when you think it’s slowing down, something major happens. Acting was fantastic, understand why it’s a classic, wouldn’t call it a masterpiece.

73. Kyoto. One of the best plays I’ve ever seen, and it’s about climate conferences. The set was stunning, the performances fantastic, the writing and directing were truly amazing, and the media really added to everything. Successfully doing a villain narration was very impressive

72. Oratorio for Living Things. What a wild experience. Absolutely loved it, though it’s totally not for everyone. The voices were beautiful, I lost count of how many times I got chills from harmonies. Ending needed work, it feels like there’s a better way to ritualize the end.

71. Punch. Not the best play. Felt preachy, some of the music choices were not great. Cool set, pretty good performances. Felt like it was missing something, some sort of bite to make it really sink its teeth in. Tempo was off as well

70. Boogie Nights. I think maybe I just didn’t get this one, because it was not a standout to me. It felt unfocused and scattered, and didn’t feel like it had a point. The acting is good, but nothing to write home about. The writing is good, but PTA has done better. Maybe I was just expecting more?

69. One Battle After Another. What an absolutely wild ride. I was tense the entire movie, yet was still laughing my ass off at multiple points. Written fantastically, performances were amazing, and really came down to being a family story despite the politics around it. Watch it

68. Gattaca Rewatch. It was a lot campier than I remembered. Like, some of this dialogue was just bad. But still a very interesting premise, and is only going to become more relevant as Genetic Adaptation becomes more common

67. Viola’s Room. What if the SNM 6th floor was an hour long experience? It’d be pretty damn good. Some of the story was hard to follow, but that may have been because I was too interested in the tech. Lots of filler hallways, but audio made them more interesting. Interested to see 2.0 of this.

66. Twelfth Night in the Park. Dinklage and Oh really carried the production. Set design was pretty basic, but story was very clear for Shakespeare. See it if given the opportunity, but not worth waking up at 6 am to see. Just watch the finale on YouTube.

65. Stranger Things Broadway. Not seen show. Pretty good! Story was better than expected, and the effects were impressive of course. I was confused why there was so much singing and dancing, felt unnecessary. A lot of the jokes didn’t land. Good not great, go if you want to see some cool tech.

64. Small Gods. The world has lost compassion, but Terry Pratchet has not. A slow start lead to some of the most beautiful sequences I’ve read. The Desert is a magical place. The characters were perfectly comical in their absurdity. I was worried it wouldn’t live up to the hype, but it did.

63. Game changer S7. Easily the best season of game changer. The creative and comedy of each and every episode was outstanding. Don’t even go back, just start with this season, it’s that good. I started to list out my fave eps, but the word count isn’t big enough. Bravo to dropout.

62. Sandman S2. Good, but I don’t think any of these episodes will stick with me as much as the Hob or Diner episodes in S1. Dream had a fantastic arc, though the ending dragged. Best episode was probably the feast? I wish assholes weren’t so creative

61. Just In Time. It’s a solid cabaret show if anything the story takes away from the otherwise stunning performances. Jonathan and Gracie have astounding energy which carries the show. Slows down a bit too much in the second act, but they print it back. It’s fun but fine. Happy Darren won the Tony

60. Isles of the Emberdark. A good cosmere standalone, which wraps up far too neatly and happily for my tastes. Starling annoyed me at the start, but I came around to liking here. Dusk was great. Interesting commentary on Colonization with some cool cosmere connections.
