Seen this with (some) CSMs. Most transition exceptionally well to organizational leadership. Others not so much and end up acting like First Sergeants with stars and wreaths.
It boils down to people uncomfortable at a certain level and reverting to what they know.

I think a lot of field living is borne of necessity rather than deliberation, but your point stands - yes, QoL is vastly different by rank band in the Navy. I don’t completely disagree but it does serve a purpose beyond just senior leader self dealing.

I think the standard test for religious exemptions broadly should be “Is this a common view or is some cheese dick trying to reverse engineer an exemption from some brain rot culture war shit he believes?” although I acknowledge it’d be hard to quantify.

To wit: I knew of an officer back around 07 who barged into the e6 and below berthing for some thing or another and his peers handed him his ass on a platter, because it was their space and only one of a few where they weren’t subjected to being fucked with by chiefs and officers.

I agree with what I infer to be your broader point about parochialism, but these separate messes are also a place where people can in some respects dispense with the formality associated with more mixed rank spaces, a luxury when you’re underway for months and months on end.
