ever increasing calls for more “control from the centre” are symptomatic of this imo. We have lost incredible amounts of state capacity (or simply ability to do and deliver things!) - but it’s not in central government, rather in industry and local gov!

The Economist coverage is grim but this is exactly how it should be reported.
