Most will find this book offensive and frankly ridiculous by today's standard. But we thought it was a useful exercise to see what people were reading in the 1800s.
My kid was asking me the meaning of words throughout, so it's vocabulary building for the 8-12 age-range. Lexile 900L+

Fantastical insects and plants definitely play a role in the book I'm currently writing - most of which are based on real-life counterparts. My kids and I love looking at science and nature photography and wanted to share some of our favorite spooky nature pics today.

While I speak Hindi and Japanese fairly fluently, I only know a handful of words of Spanish and Arabic—picked up because I've lived in Southern California for many years and in the Middle East for a few. So, if I got the Arabic and Spanish wrong, please feel free to correct me.

After my kid read Keepers of the Lost Cities by S. Messenger, which has characters that can read minds Kid: Mom? Do you think we'll be able to read minds some day? Me: Oh, we already can. Kid: . . . What? Me: Yep. Scientists have been mapping where words live in the brain for years. In the earliest experiments, they would put a device called an ECOG (electrocorticogram) mesh on the brains of patients undergoing open brain surgery and as patients heard words, signals from their brains would pass through the mesh in order to create a "dictionary" that could correspond spoken words to brain activity. Kid: How advanced is this tech? Me: Relatively advanced. Just recently,they tested it on a . . . patient who lost his voice to ALS - a disease that basically paralyzes you. They implanted electrodes in his brain and had him try to say various words. With the help of a computer, over time, they accurately predicted speech from a 125,000 word vocabulary with only an 24% error rate. Kid: That's crazy. But you had to try to speak it? Just thinking it didn't work? Me: Not as well, but the computer was able to pick up words they were thinking with some accuracy as well. Kid: Mom, should we just invest in Magneto's helmet now? When the error rate is still 24%? Me (laughing): For this to work, they have to plant electrodes into the brain. The technology needed to pluck thoughts from the air doesn't exist yet. So, for now, you're safe. And, besides. . I don't need electrodes to read your mind. I already know you haven't finished your homework. Go. Kid: Aww

There are many old proverbs (especially about animals and the weather) that have proven to be true when approached scientifically. I should clarify that the book I'm writing is definitely NOT about vampires.
