Rereading your post I wasn't being very charitable, sorry. It's definitely turned into a meme, which I have mixed feelings about. Growing up on the iron range in the 90s it was still a very keenly felt tragedy. The renewed interest around the anniversary has overall been a boon here I'd say.

I would suggest that there are communities and places for which the memory of the Fitzgerald and the dangers of great lakes shipping is not performative. (Photo taken during a lunch walk five years ago in Duluth, MN)
