I'm not 100% sure if this is how it works, but I think it's sort of an interesting telegraph that TEW literally puts evil particles in the air when there's danger near. Doesn't stop me from sneaking even when there are no threats in sight though.

One of my favorite things about TEW is when it really starts putting emphasis on the trippy nature of the story. You get inside an elevator in the underground parking lot, only to end up high in the sky, with a view of the destroyed city. Then crashed back down into the murky waters.
