Lover of cats, urbanism, learning new things, and systems thinking.
The problem with that idea is it’s been done and it’s been studied to death (pun intended). Harsher punishments, including capital punishment, don’t deter crime. Economics is a much bigger driver. We’ve known this for decades. Look, this is a review done back in the 70s that told us this.

The Rectum most likely is the source of that one.

This book focuses on the US, but I think there’s overlap for Canada as well as I’m sure you have the same type of folks yearning for the days of yore where everything was better.

Appreciate the link on the more archaic version of the term!

I grew up a suburban kid who was lucky enough to have parents that taught me better. I always thought that shit was gross. Like, y'all really couldn't wait to be the one wearing the boot huh? Then again, most don't realize they're two missed checks away from being "broke."

Defeatism is insidious isn't it? I try to take solace in that I don't think the number of people who thought something was hopeless has changed all that much in the last 500 years and yet we've gotten this far.

Social media has just made these folks more visible and annoying.

True.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of MAGA types in tech. They just consider themselves a higher tier over the “riffraff” of commoners who didn’t learn skills.

It’s also very common to find software engineers who are also anarcho-capitalists. Tech in the US is very strange.

Word of caution though. Having spent a little time in this space, it definitely reminds me of the firearms community meaning you find quite a few right wing chuds. That being said, just like with 2A folks, I’m sure there are decent pockets in here somewhere that aren’t like that.

Not yet! I’m aiming for January but I just picked up a UV-5R for $27 USD and I’m using that YouTube channel to study for the test. It doesn’t look too hard but I want to get it first try. I’ve also been trying to learn Morse code as well. That’s been interesting!

Then going to said lunch spot where your staff all go, cloning their badges giving me access later to both the building and the server room.

It damn sure ain’t providing multimodal transportation. 🙄

I love how people misuse terms for their own benefit.

Social engineering is when I ring up your call center, chat up your CSR also while asking about good lunch recommendations in town because I’m moving there.

Go for it! I just decided to go for mine as well. Been thinking about it for like two years. This is what helped me get started.

I’ve been wondering when I’d get to use this again.

This is like when you get into those arguments about how many people were killed during the Holocaust. Like, at what point does it stop being horrific? A mere 2 million? Maybe 500K?

Same with this. If we’re arguing over if it’s double or triple digits, then we’re having the wrong conversation.

OP is thinking of the H-2B visa. I know they’re just showing appreciation for the work. Good news is we have many bricklayers in North America who can do this! The main thing is being paid adequately for that work.

You normally bringing guest workers when no one else is around to do the work.

I don’t think so. I can’t find the article or podcast I found this out in, but he has a very sketchy past as a mayor. Issues with the way he was handling finances and a one incident that, on the surface, looks like racism.
