Can my #kidlit friends explain this to me. On pages like these in Mother Bruce where the text reads "So he got creative," and "Nothing worked," and the illustration adds context, are the concepts for those images more often conceived by the author or the illustrator? #askwriter #askagent #askeditor

The original word for 'bear' was lost because folks in the middle ages feared that saying its name would summon the animal, so they called it 'bear,' meaning 'the brown one,' to avoid invoking its true name. Also, this is the extinct Giant Short-faced Bear. You won't catch me summoning that thing!

Any other #kidlit writers absolutely adore What Do You Do with an Idea by Kobi Yamada, illustrated by Mae Besom? It's one of those wonderfully uplifting #picturebooks that I (writer dad) love at least as much as my daughter.

I don't know what #poetryfriday is, but I'll bet it has something to do with sharing poetry. Came across this gem today by Ha Jin... Along with a comment that went something like this: "Clarity is a virtue, complexity not a necessity."

👋 Just left The Other Platform. I'm a NYC teacher & writer, & one of those dads who will show you ~1000 pictures of his kids if you ask to see one. Mostly, I've written MG & YA, but recently started writing #picturebooks after reading (& loving) so many with my daughter. #kidlit #kidlitchat #mglit

Dumplings for Lili, written and illustrated by Melissa Iwai. This I read as a potential comp for my picture book. Man. It's just so, so good. The shape of the story. The build up. The connections. The little twist at the end. Absolutely perfect. #kidlit 💙📚

Absolutely love the art of David Roberts in the Rosie Revere, Engineer and friends - - Ada Twist, scientist; Iggy Peck, Architect - - books. Just look at these end pages! Such style!💙📚 #kidlit

Was it merely the wind, or a plant's desperate bid for a bigger pot?

Also, there's such a strong and symbiotic relationship between text and image. As here. Look at that bleeding wave of watercolor anger. Absolutely lovely. I wonder if this unity is more apparent in works by author/illustrators like Reynolds. What do *you* think? 💙📚 #kidlit

What makes Ish by Peter H. Reynolds work so well? First, it's darn clever, as the best picture books are. The story's exploration of the titular "Ish" is something we would all benefit from thinking about... How having our eyes set on perfection and exactness can so often hold us back. 💙📚

Here's one from Grumpy Monkey Don't Be Scared by Suzanne and Max Lang... Love it when, as here, a picture book makes me question where the line is. Porcupine is just like, don't be scared, guys, it's just a predator with a rotting carcass. 👍 💙📚 #kidlitchat

Just finished reading the picturebook lggy Peck, Architect with my daughter. Enjoyed the playfulness of the language and story, and the way Beaty and Roberts weave a compelling (yet simple) narrative about "building a dream" even when others try to tear it down. Nicely done. 👏 💙📚

The inspiration for my picture book. I send this in with the query letter, right?
