❤️ Dad 🍎 Teacher 🖋️ #Kidlit writer 💙📚 Here for the #BookSky 🤝🫶 Current WIP: a fun STEM-related PB 🔬🧪

👋 Just left The Other Platform. I'm a NYC teacher & writer, & one of those dads who will show you ~1000 pictures of his kids if you ask to see one. Mostly, I've written MG & YA, but recently started writing #picturebooks after reading (& loving) so many with my daughter. #kidlit #kidlitchat #mglit

I most respect a description of characters that paints pictures in the least number of words possible. Just reading something now where every character is getting the same 1) hair color, 2) eye color, 3) clothing, 4) special gritty detail treatment. And it's really pulling me out of it. 💙📚

I respond with GIFs. All hail the power of pictures! (I wonder if this tendency to GIF is more common among picture book writers... 🤔) #kidlit 💙📚

Once upon a time I researched the stories behind the logos of 32 book publishing houses.

The Tales Behind the Branding of 32 Storied Book Publishers
Logos fight for center stage in the theatre of our attention — but not when we’re holding a book. Publishing houses tuck their marks away. Each book is an autonomous property, best known by its cover…

Can my #kidlit friends explain this to me. On pages like these in Mother Bruce where the text reads "So he got creative," and "Nothing worked," and the illustration adds context, are the concepts for those images more often conceived by the author or the illustrator? #askwriter #askagent #askeditor

I was today years old when I realized what happened to the Little Piggy when it went to the market. 😭 Nursery rhymes are brutal. #kidlit 💙📚

Finally have a #writing space to call my own. 🙌 Now I need your help, #Booksky #writingcommunity! What is the best way to purchase #kidlit and fantasy art directly from artists? If I have favorite artists, or even favorite illustrations, is there a good way to go about ordering large prints?

This is my first #kidlitchat. Took me a minute to realize there's a prompt! Reposting for anyone else who is confused!
TOPIC: Tonight we're hitting the #kidlit classics. Can you point to the stories that inspired you to pursue a career in books for children? What about the ones you missed early on and have come to admire as an adult? #kidlitchat

The original word for 'bear' was lost because folks in the middle ages feared that saying its name would summon the animal, so they called it 'bear,' meaning 'the brown one,' to avoid invoking its true name. Also, this is the extinct Giant Short-faced Bear. You won't catch me summoning that thing!

#ThingsIlearnedfromX:

1. Don't focus on followers/likes
2. The best way to make meaningful connections is by engaging with others - read, think, reply!
3. If it feels like work, or it's taking you away from your creative endeavors, take a step back.

Can we keep this going?

Any other #kidlit writers absolutely adore What Do You Do with an Idea by Kobi Yamada, illustrated by Mae Besom? It's one of those wonderfully uplifting #picturebooks that I (writer dad) love at least as much as my daughter.
